Shopping for swimwear can be challenging, especially when your “girls” aren’t sitting like they did when you were in your 20’s. Whether you’re dealing with a long torso, a pear shape, extra weight, a small chest, a mastectomy or a menopausal midsection, there are swimsuits that target all of these issues and more.

From bikinis to tankinis, one-pieces and swim skirts, there’s a style for every body type. However, choosing the right style of swimwear is just one aspect of finding flattering swimwear when you’re over 40.

Here are five tips to keep in mind when shopping for swimwear.

Tip #1: Don’t Jump Straight to the Latest Trend

Every season brings new fashion trends and swimwear is no exception. But, that’s not always the best route for every woman. In fact, traditional styles can provide a classic, timeless (and comfortable) look that has you feeling amazing.

Translation: While it’s good to stay on top of the trends, don’t feel obligated to buy into what’s hot right now.

Tip #2: Remember What You Love About Your Body

It’s all too easy to hear the negative talk that surrounds swimwear season and the resulting panic, thinking you don’t have the “summer body” all the talk shows and magazines are buzzing about.

So, before you start shopping, take a minute to remember what you DO love about your body. Heading out to shop with a positive mindset will help you see how different styles make you look great.

Tip #3: Test Out Different Fabrics and Patterns

There are a lot of options out there. Don’t be afraid to try out a new fabric or pattern to see how it makes you feel. Some fabrics offer more texture and can elevate a solid color to a new level.

If you tend to go toward simpler styles, give a pattern a try – you might be surprised how well it complements your look.

Tip #4: Don’t Stress About Size

Your size is just a number. That number will change from swimsuit to swimsuit. Every company is a little different, and your size might vary from style to style.

Don’t be afraid to go up or down a size if necessary. Remember, it’s all about what makes you feel and look your best.

Tip #5: Take it for a Test Run

Before you commit to your new swimwear, do more than look in the mirror. Walk around the space, move your arms and legs, jump around a little. Does the suit ride up, pinch you or otherwise feel uncomfortable?

Remember, you probably won’t be sitting perfectly still when you’re wearing it out and about, so make sure it moves with you comfortably.
