When it comes to living your most fabulous midlife, one of the best things you can do is keep yourself physically fit.

No matter what kind of exercise you do, the most important thing is to do it consistently. Whether you’ve been staying fit regularly or want to get back on the wagon, here are 4 ways you can stay fit after 40:

#1: Start Slow and Stay Consistent

When you first start working out again, it can be easy to go hard. Now, the best thing you can do is get your body used to movement by pushing yourself – but not too much. Start slow and stick with it … that’s the challenge.

#2: Eat Right

The truth is, while exercise is important, a fit body is made in the kitchen. Try swapping out processed foods for whole foods from nature – greens and plant proteins are a good beginning. And speaking of proteins, aim to make them a part of every meal. Oh, and don’t skip breakfast.

#3: Sleep Enough

Without proper rest, your body can’t repair itself when you exercise. This means, if you aren’t getting a good enough sleep your body won’t have enough time to gain muscle or even tone up. Aim for at least 7.5 hours of sleep a night to give your body enough strength to keep you exercising and living your best days.

#4: Alternate Days

One of the best ways to stay in shape is to pick certain days to focus on certain body parts. Make Monday the day to train your favorite body part to get you motivated for the week. Then train arms or another body part the next day. Don’t forget to give yourself at least 2 rest days during the week.

BONUS TIP: Set Goals

While staying fit in your 40s is more about the journey than the destination, having a goal can help you stay motivated. Decide what you want – to lose weight, gain strength, you name it – and write it somewhere you see it every day.

Staying fit in your 40s is all about moving your body. As a part of your daily routine, exercise with yoga, a YouTube exercise video, Pilates, or at the gym – it doesn’t matter as long as you break a sweat.
