The Gen X Woman’s Guide to Self-Care During the Holidays

Aren’t the holidays a wonderful time of year? Everything seems to slow down, giving busy Gen Xers the chance to wind down, reevaluate and restore themselves.

And, while it may be tempting to put all your energy into new passion projects or family moments (it’s okay to do it all!), one thing we’re recommending this winter is to double down on your self-care.

Here are 4 ways you can give yourself the gift of self-care this holiday season:

Way #1: Tell People No

Boundaries are a huge part of self-care, and saying no is one way to maintain them. Think about it like this – every time you say “yes” to someone else, you’re saying “no” to yourself. This holiday season, find ways to tell people “No,” and throw away the guilt that’s often associated with it, too.

Way #2: Forget the Schedule

It’s so easy to plan fun activities during a holiday break, but sometimes what a Gen X woman needs more than anything is the space and freedom to do absolutely nothing. Erase some events from your calendar and give yourself time to do whatever you want – whether it’s laying in the bed, watching Netflix or getting a well-deserved pedicure.

Way #3: Decorate With What You Like

Let’s be honest… folks give us things, but we don’t always like them. Still, we feel obligated to put them up around the house as a sign of respect. However, when you decorate your house with things you don’t love, it can feel like you’re a stranger in your own home. This season, only decorate with what lights you up inside!

Way #4: Take Yourself on a Date

Warm up some hot cocoa, put on your most luxurious cashmere pajamas, pull up a velvet throw and spend a day treating yourself to an at-home date. Whether you’re watching old Christmas movies or jamming to your favorite songs, make it a day where you do all of your favorite things.

There’s no hard or fast rule on what self-care is supposed to look like. The only important thing is making the time for it.
